Project Description:

Mine Drainage in Tioga and Catawissa Watersheds SRBC, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation (BAMR) will develop Qualified Hydrologic Unit Plans (QHUPs) for both the Tioga River and Catawissa Creek Watersheds. These QHUPs serve as restoration plans for a watershed. The QHUP process outlines the existing conditions for a watershed impacted from legacy coal mine discharge impacts, and proposes the path forward for remediating those impacts in order to restore the land and water for both environmental and economic benefits. An approved QHUP for each watershed will also allow Pennsylvania to use Surface Mine Control and Reclamation Act funding for the construction of treatment plants to tackle the most critical discharges in order to works towards restoring water quality conditions in both watersheds.
